Something we all suspected. Are you sure about those figures?
An anonymous survey has revealed that 19% of British MPs have experienced mental health problems. but are afraid to admit it for fear of losing their seat. This comes as a surprise, but only because the figure is so low. The Palace of Westminster contains the full gamut of personalities, from left-wing apologists for everything, to the swivel eyed loonies on the right. There appear to be only a few who have more than a tenuous grip on reality.
The questionnaire, issued by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Mental Health, was completed by 94 MPs, 100 lords and 151 parliamentary staff. More than a quarter had a mental health issue, while 86 per cent of MPs said their job was stressful.
Liberal Democrat MP, Mark Oaten, whose gay affair with a rent boy was exposed by the press in 2006, said: "The truth is many politicians, myself included, have found the job enormously stressful, I was regularly taking Prozac." At the time he claimed that going bald had led him to betray his wife.
Oaten stepped down from the race to replace Charles Kennedy, after the former Lib Dem leader was forced to resign by his own MPs when his problems with alcohol became clear. Very sympathetic that.
